In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 26, 2018, a devastating first severely damaged the Hornby Island Community School – the only school on Hornby Island. Firefighters from Hornby Island Fire Rescue and Denman Island Fire Rescue battled the blaze for 12 hours. The fire rendered a large part of the facility unsafe and unusable, with little more than a week until the first day of school.
Hornby Island lies just off the east coast of Vancouver Island, around 100 kilometres northwest of Nanaimo.
In November 2019, the Comox Valley Board of Education issued an RFP for Construction Management Services for the Hornby Island School Replacement project. AFC Construction, a long time client, hired Outsource Marketing to help develop their submission.
Our Plan of Action
In a small community like Hornby Island, the school is the centre of civic life. It must meet the needs of a wide range of stakeholders and serve the residents for decades. Hornby Island’s new school would be a place, first and foremost, for students. But it would also serve as a place to host community events and offer adults opportunities for recreation and socializing.
To successfully design and construct a school that would meet the needs and aspirations of local residents, the process must be collaborative and engage a variety of stakeholders. It would also benefit from a Construction Manager that had a team with deep roots in the community.
Our approach to winning this submission leveraged AFC Construction’s robust portfolio of similar projects, including many on Hornby Island, and the team’s deep roots in the local community. We also reinforced throughout the submission AFC’s extensive experience working with publicly funded organizations, understanding their processes and the importance of respecting both budget and timelines
In December 2019, AFC Construction was awarded the Construction Management contract to replace the Hornby Island School.
